Vintage Jewellery and Costume JewelleryVintage jewellery is something my wife is always barking on about, and I never knew anything about it until quite recently. It appears that most vintage jewellery is not, what I thought, expensive and unobtainable. A lot of vintage jewellery is simply used as costume jewellery these days, and it’s purchased by a huge amount of young and old people. I had no idea how popular vintage jewellery had become, and I have since discovered that just because it’s vintage, it does not necessarily mean that it’s expensive. Costume jewellery has always been pretty cheap, even I know this, and it was a joy to find out that all the youngsters today who wear costume jewellery, were now turning towards vintage jewellery to fulfil this desire. History repeating I suppose. I bet that they’ve all raided their grandmother’s vintage jewellery box to satiate their need for costume jewellery. Fortunately it isn’t as bad as all that, I have since discovered, and costume jewellery manufacturers are just replicating the designs of vintage jewellery to satisfy the demands of another generation. Perhaps we’ll lose sight of where the original actually is these days? Vintage FurnitureVintage furniture appears to be becoming the new designer brand. There is a tendency toward the bourgeois these days in interior design, and vintage furniture fulfils this shift in fashion. There are many beautiful pieces of vintage furniture out there and it’s not all at high prices. You could perhaps do the old “bargain hunt” exercise (if you’re familiar with the programme) and go vintage furniture shopping at one of the many antique markets or auctions around the country. These items of vintage furniture do not all necessarily sell at high prices in auction, they only really ever do if there is a collector present who actually wants that piece; so you actually have a good chance of picking up, not only a piece of vintage furniture, but perhaps an antique investment too! However, as with everything in these times of hyper-reality, vintage furniture can be replicated to an excellent standard, and mass produced to make it accessible, serviceable and less expensive to the general public. You can have vintage furniture at a fraction of the cost if you don’t want to go hunting around for it; and in the majority of cases (and quite sad in many) you can barely tell the difference! Vintage FashionVintage fashion can mean almost anything old looking. It simply doesn’t have to be original. This is something you must understand from the outset if you’re getting into vintage fashion, and in many cases the original vintage fashion items are quite unusable these days simply because of their age. This is especially the case with vintage fashion clothes. Vintage fashion clothes can be bought from second hand shops and most good antique shops, but there is a tendency towards not wanting to wear them through fear of damage. The answer to this of course is to buy from one of the many the vintage fashion replica stores around these days. There are a surprising amount of these places available on the internet, and a few hidden away down side streets in various cities and towns; and extensive search of the internet might help you discover some of them, and there’s always the yellow pages for those others. Of course, we must not forget the availability of vintage fashion from costume shops. This is especially good if you really only want some vintage fashion for a party or an event. Don’t neglect to ask around and find exactly the type of vintage fashion you’re after. |
